Nerdy Solar Math

WATTS  VOLTS  AMPS

  • Terms to know when dealing with Solar are:
  • Volts (E) – the difference in electric potential between two points.
  • Amps (I) – the flow of an electric charge through a cable.
  • Watts (P) – a combination of Voltage and Current as a measurement of Power.
  • Solar System capacity is typically specified in Watts.
  • Battery capacity is typically specified in Amps.
  • Watts = Amps * Volts
  • Easy way for me to remember is: P = I * E
  • Where P = Power in Watts, I is Amps, and E is Volts.
  • Useful Variations include I = P / E and E = P / I
  • One Watt Hour (Wh) is one Watt of continuous Power for one Hour.
